Sprains

“Sprain” is a term relating to the injuries that occur with ligaments. Ligaments are soft tissue bands made of elastic fibers that connect bones on either side of a joint thus holding the joint in its correct position. For example, there are ligaments in the knee -  the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments and the medial and lateral collateral ligaments.  It is also seen in the ankle on the outer and inner side and in the mid foot. There are ligaments spanning the vertebral bodies in the neck, thoracic spine and lumbar spine, which can be injured traumatically in motor vehicle accidents, in contact sports, or in prolonged sitting at computer stations, or reading for extended period of time.

Treatments of sprains depend on the severity of the sprain, the chronicity and time period of the sprain and the location of the sprain. A combination of anti-inflammatory medication, immobilization, physical therapy, stretching and strengthening muscle groups will resolve the situation. Very infrequently, a surgical intervention or repair is required.
